Our Naturepedic Organic Cotton Lightweight Classic 2 Stage Waterproof Crib & Toddler mattress is designed to meet your baby's need for a firmer surface on one side, and can be flipped over when needed to give your toddler a bit softer surface.  Naturepedic mattresses are made in accordance with the Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) firmness recommendations for crib & toddler mattresses.  A 100% food-grade polyethylene layer on this mattress makes it waterproof and easy to clean without the use of harsh, potentially dangerous chemicals.  Polyethylene is an eco friendly plastic that is favored by the food packaging industry for being non-toxic. 

Naturepedic puts great emphasis on omitting allergenic materials, which are found in nearly all other mattresses.  Only U.S. grown, unbleached, certified organic cotton is used to fill our Naturepedic Organic Cotton Lightweight Classic 2 Stage Waterproof Crib & Toddler mattresses.  Certified organic cotton that is unbleached, undyed, non GMO, grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilizers, is perhaps the most healthful option Nature has for a mattress, not to mention it is a renewable resource.  No wool, latex or mohair is used in our mattresses as these materials are known to cause allergic reactions in certain individuals.

Naturepedic's Non-Toxic Fire Protection
Naturepedic has a solid commitment to doing what is right, and non-toxic fire protection is one of them.  Naturepedic mattresses are filled with organic cotton, a major advantage over conventional mattresses filled with polyurethane foam, latex or other petroleum based fillers, and therefor does not need to be subjected to harsh fire retardants to meet government flammability standards.  Naturepedic mattresses are able to meet & exceed Federal & State flammability standards thru the use of food-grade non-toxic ingredients such as baking soda, hydrated silica and cellulose.  Baking soda, most commonly recognized as a baking ingredient, is an excellent non-toxic fire retardant.  Silica, a major component of human tissue, bones, teeth and cartilage, is a naturally occurring mineral that is sold in health food stores as a dietary supplement.  Silica is found in large quantities in clay, sand and rocks, and is often the main ingredient in natural toothpastes.  Cellulose, to which the baking soda and hydrated silica are permanently bonded, is an organic compound with a low carbon footprint primarily sourced from eucalyptus and poplar trees.  Baking soda, hydrated silica and cellulose fiber come together to provide powerful fire protection that does not break down.

Nearly all conventional mattresses use polyurethane foam or latex as the main filler.  Being highly flammable by nature, these materials are either treated or wrapped in industrial strength fire retardant chemicals.  Fire retardant chemicals raise a great deal of concern regarding health and toxicity.  Most manufacturers choose not to disclose which chemical ingredients are contained in their mattresses.
